About the theatre

Built in 1936, the Aloha Theatre was the largest venue on the island with a seating capacity of 675. From sailors, to plantation workers, to local kids, the theatre has been at the heart of the bustle of Hanapepe Town throughout the years. In 1966 when “The Endless Summer” debuted there was a line stretching all the way to the highway. Closing in 1981, the theatre has been abandoned for nearly 40 years until it was bought by Aloha Theatre Hui led by Lynn Danaher in 2019. Restoration on this historic landmark is well underway.

The work began in 2019. The stabilization process on the outer frame of the building has been completed. While many parts of the building were in severe disrepair and needed to be removed, the 1930s salt cured old growth fir siding, the primary concrete Facade and foundation has stayed strong. The original sign that was built by Mr. Doi in Kalaheo, is has been repaired by his grandson. Every effort is being made to use recycled building materials to limit landfill waste. To date a great deal has been accomplished. The facade had been completely repaired with framing and new stucco. A new roof has been installed. Final plans have been approved by Kauai County for a 16 room Inn, with a cafe and retail space. Construction on the Inn is set to begin Nov. 2023.
